HIYA, YOU’VE REACHED THE WEBSITE OF
EMILY
ASH POWELL
Emily Ash Powell is a Welsh writer who lives in London and misses the sea. She is an ideas person, a brand obsessive and a creative leader who finds it a lot easier to write about herself in the third person.
Emily has been a resident of the creative, advertising and startup worlds for 10 years and counting. By day, she is the Global Head of Copy & Editorial at Bumble, where she gets to combine her love of words with her love of helping people to find their people.
And by other times of the day (and maybe even the night, too), you’ll find Emily mentoring young writers and creatives, writing on her Substack and working on her first book.
Writer, CREATIVE PERSON & SPEAKER
As a writer, strategist, brand consultant, creative leader (and all those other titles that basically mean writing words and coming up with ideas), Emily believes in the power of doing good and having fun.
She’s done both of these things through her work with some of the UK's fastest-growing DTC startups and scale-ups. She has a particular love of those with big missions and great personalities, and worked with brands who change the world of pet food (tails.com), skincare (Skin + Me), men’s grooming (Harry’s), home decoration (Lick), fresh flowers (Freddie’s Flowers), chocolate (Tony’s Chocolonely) and most recently, love (Bumble).
Emily also likes big brands (and she cannot lie). She’s written words and had ideas for brilliant brands like IKEA, Virgin Voyages, The Economist, Disney, John Lewis, Marvel, Virgin Holidays, ASDA, P&G, Bacardi, Volkswagen and more.
In 2022, she won the Women In Marketing Highly Commended Copywriter Award for her tone of voice work with Skin + Me.
Beyond the brands, Emily writes for publications like Refinery29, Cosmopolitan, Huffpost, Stylist, Metro, the iPaper, Campaign Magazine and others on the topics of work, love, women, creativity, dogs and life. She has been interviewed on the radio (BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio 1) and podcasts about many of these topics, too.
She is the author of Hurdling, the Substack newsletter that looks at (and celebrates) how we get over all the obstacles that stand in our way. She would actually really love it if you read it.
In 2021, she teamed up with Dave Buonaguidi (aka, Real Hackney Dave) to create the I Want To Eat Crisps With You series, which appeared at The Other Art Fair.
Emily mentors young writers and regularly speaks at schools and universities, and hosts events and meet-ups to celebrate the joys (and pains) of creating a career from writing. She is currently working on her first book.
You can find answers to your Frantically Asked Questions here, and maybe even ask Emily a question of your own (except ‘how is your book going?’) here.
